Transfer of Funds

I wish to move money from a Canadian account to my U.S. account.  Is that as simple as tranferring the Canadian funds to the checking account and depositing a check here for the amount I wish to transfer?  I have checking and savings account in both places. The difference in currency would need to be resolved along the way.
   Also, is there a limit on the amount of the check?
