I got bought by Wells Fargo - I never would have chosen them just from investigative reports I have seen about how they have ruined the lives of innocent people trying to save their houses.  W/F is a horrible excuse for a bank.  Their Winder branch has a very arrogant manager, Chris.  He is so ignorant & rude & don't know how he ever got hired, but then again, W/F standards are very low.  I ended up send a 6 page letter to the President of Wells Fargo after several phone calls to their corporate office.  They didn't even have the guts to respond.  I have closed all of my accounts & moved on.  I am so sorry for the people that have to deal with those THIEVES.  They have a monopoly also over HVAC service companies as they are the only CROOKS you can finance with.  When they go down I hope they go down HARD!!!  STAY AWAY FROM WELLS FARGO!!!  How sad for the founder - they have ripped his beliefs to SHREDS.

International wire transfer scams facilitated by Wells Fargo

On 3/14/2012, I was told by the Sellwood Wells Fargo bank manager that "upper management" has instructed their employees not discuss anything with me regarding an incident described herein. Since then I have been passed off to several of Wells Fargo Bank’s chain of command and was finally asked to contact a person in California “in writing”.

On 2/2/2012 and 2/24/2012, my 71 year old mom who is on a fixed income, wired transferred $45,000 and $80,000 respectively, to a country in west Africa. One banker at Wells Fargo who helped her with both transactions never “tried to stop her” or “warn her” that the transaction she was about to make could be fraud.

I understand that Wells Fargo’s bank employees are highly trained to identify fraud activity and have strict policies in place to handle cases where fraud activity is suspect. Unfortunately, one of your bank employees did not follow protocol and as a result, my mom and dad have lost every dime of their IRA savings and are now moving out of their home.

Oregon Attorney General John Kroger announced that in 2011, international money transfer scams is listed as one of  the top three complaints on the Oregon Department of Justice's annual Top 10 Consumer Complaint List. In my mother’s case,  one Oregonians’ loss represents 12.3% of the combined total of Oregonians who reported losing  $1,016,583 due to international money scams in 2011.

The tragedy doesn't stop there.

On 3/13/2012, Ed Teachout a reporter with our NBC affiliate KGW, investigated the crime against my mom (http://www.kgw.com/news/consumer/).  My mother told her story despite her shame and humiliation. Tom Unger, Wells Fargo Bank’s spokes person, told a story too. Tom Unger told the viewing public that "three employees tried to stop the transaction" because they "suspected this was a case of fraud”. Mr. Unger, as a knee jerk reaction, went on the "defense" and lied on camera without getting the facts straight first.

Here are few things I would like from Wells Fargo:

1)        Clarify what happened on the two dates 2/2/2012 and 2/24/2012 by reviewing the surveillance video. My mom only worked with one banker, Nick, for both wire transactions. Surveillance video would discredit Mr. Unger’s public statement that “three employees tried to stop the transaction”. Without discovering there is a “hole” in the system Wells Fargo will not implement procedures to protect future customers from devastating loss.

2)        I would like a formal apology from Mr. Unger in a follow-up story Reporter Ed Teachout is going to air next month.

3)        I would like to know what written policies are in place to deal with instances where bank employees suspect there is fraud, do they document that the customer was warned? Or do they simply state that "this may be a case of fraud" and continue with the transaction? When bankers state they “tried to stop” the customer, what is the specific action that is taken? Does the bank employee check for a secondary contact listed on the account, possibly a son or daughter?  As a matter of fact, I am listed on as cosigner on a secondary account of my mother but no phone call was made.

4)        I would like to see Wells Fargo to adopt a uniform protocol that will ensure this will not happen to other innocent people. As it stands the current procedures that are in place are not working.

5)        What will Wells Fargo do if the truth came out that a Wells Fargo employee failed to act and then lied to conceal their failures.

The tragic part of this story is not only that my mom was scammed, is that it could have been prevented. There were professionals who watched this happen and did nothing.

Because internet crimes are getting more systemic and sophisticated the fight against international money transfer scams must involve the commercial banks that are the conduit to the success of their business. Until banks are held accountable for facilitating these money transfers nothing will change.

I do not have anything nice to say about this branch in John's Landing. My fiance and I received a check from my mother and I signed it over to him to be cash because his bank was open and mine was not (He banks with Wells) I have lived in Lake Oswego my entire life and so has he and we have never had someone be so rude and profile us.
He took the check in to get cashed and they told him that they could not cash it because he could have found it on the street. When he told them that I was in the car they said they would check his bank account and see what they could do. (My fiance just recently lost his job so nt much money in there) and they checked it and said there was nothing they could do they shuold go to my  bank!!! I have never felt discriminated in my entire life. This bank had no longical reasoning so what they did. I told my my fiance to go back in a just close his account which we will be doing in the next week. GOOD JOB WELLS FARGO STAFF!

Terrible customer service. The Worst. You cannot just go in there and deposit a check. Oh no that would be too easy. Instead you get put through the ringer. They try and sell you on all of their products and ask if you have sat down with a personal banker lately. It feels like you are at a used car dealership! They are all so fake. You can tell they are told what to say and to pretend that they are interested in how your day is or if you are enjoying the weather, it is so ridiculous! They are like drones! Horrible.

I had a home mortgage and checking / savings account with Wells Fargo, but when refinancing for lower interest rates, Wells Fargo did not compete.   While shopping for lower interest rates, I first went to Wells Fargo.  My calls were not returned so I transferred my lower interest rate loan to Associated Bank.  When working to close my accounts, I was told by an associate that I shouldn't get any account fees charged while I waited for final checks to clear after my mortgage was closed. Even though an associate told me that the fee, if charged, would be returned, I was told by the bank manaager that only half of my fee could be returned. What customer service!

This specific branch is full of the worst staff and management.  They use to have such courteous and nice staff, but recently they changed to a whole new crew and they are a nightmare.  Each visit, I have not been greeted, every teller, including manager has had an attitude, and they are so unprofessional.  When I actually said that to them, they told me to go to another branch and refused to service me any longer. I have a lot of money in this bank and they refused service...I have never ever been told to go somewhere else for any type of service.  Save yourself the headache and go to another bank....

I asked about the status of my new card, since my old one was going to expire within the month and I hadn't received my new one.  The banker offered to order a backup one, but in the process inadvertently cancelled my existing card, interrupting the service.  Moreover, she claimed a rushed new one would come on a certain day.  It failed to arrive, and I took it upon myself to call the 800 number and inquire when it would come.  On the phone, they gave me a tracking number for the package, which said it was held at the FedEx location, probably explaining why it did not arrive at the branch.  (This in itself is a breach of security, no doubt.)  The banker refused to acknowledge this point, just saying she'd get back to me when it came, refusing to check herself for sure when it would arrive.

Since the purchase of Wachovia by Wells Fargo, I have had nothing but issues.  The bureaucracy creates an environment where no one is accountable, the branch manager claims no abililty to over-ride Corporate rules and any attempt to elevate leads one to the 800 customer service number where the agent can only take information down to open a complaint that someone will read within 24 hours...no promise of any timely follow-up.  Further the customer service can't even identify who is someone to contact who has authority over the branch manager.  Unbelievable.  I had a large bonus check (> 25K) being held for 9 days despite clear evidence from the paying bank that the check had cleared in 1 day.  And no one could help remove the hold and give me access to my funds.  Speaking to Daniel Perea, the Executive Corporate Assistant for John Stumpf, Wells Fargo CEO, I was told that the holds were legal and no one had the authority to release them even with the knowledge or evidence of the funds being collected.  So good luck banking with these guys.  I'm out of here as soon as they give me back my money & I can close my accounts.

I've had good customer service for the basic stuff but Wells staff need better training and communication for the more complex financial transactions.  My elderly father's IRA CD had matured and was facing rollover to an extremely low %rate.  The staff talked us into putting it into a high yield savings account.  AT NO TIME did they state that this action would result in a GROSS distribution of his IRA.  I assumed (wrongly) that we were just maximizing a better interest rate in a different savings vehicle but were keeping the funds in an IRA.  Unfortunately, I did not realize our error until I received his 2011 tax paperwork from Wells Fargo regarding the gross distrition.  Why the heck would we chase a minor interest yield difference of less than 1% versus a tax rate of 25% "income" on a $30,000 distribution?  It's a huge red flag! Not once did Well's staff explain that he would be cashing out his IRA.  Not once.  Well, needless to say we are moving the bulk of his money elsewhere.  I'm pretty upset by their lack of knowledge or lack of candor, whichever it is.

Ridiculous Bank.  I spend 2 hours + a month, every month, on tiny
issues that arise with our accounts.  Our business depends on deposits of small checks and if they bounce, we are charged a hefty fee each time.  We cannot charge this to anyone; it eats into our business.  Then we are charged a huge monthly "Paid and Deposited Items Fee".
This is on top of no interest on our accounts (we may get .23 per month and usually have between $100K and $200K in our accounts.
Now let me tell you about the unbelievable turnover there during the past few years.  At one point I could not find anyone working there who could actually speak or understand English.  Then they change our account designation/types every few months (??).    Then they bifurcate our business matters and personal, which are all linked so this doubles my inconvenience, especially as I can never reach the business banking person directly.   And one of the last ones they had embezzled a ton of money!  No surprise there, really -Auuggghh

I waited in line for 10 minutes, finally got to the teller and she informs me that the check i was checking has to be verified and because there was still a line, I would now have to wait in another line to be helped. the person who wrote the check was waiting for the call and it would have taken less than a minute, i waited in line like everyone else and should have been helped when it was my turn instead of being shuffled off to someone else. this is what happens when you have a bunch of 20 something year olds trying to run a business.  I waited another 15 minutes for a supervisor to get off of a phone call, after which she checked her personal cell phone THEN noticed I was waiting for her. I told her that I was very dissapointed in the experience I had and she was not apologetic. I have never received such poor customer service at a bank before. I will never go back to this location, they need to go to the Grossmont branch and take some notes!

I am very disappointed in Wells Fargo for its poor customer service and disorganization.  I don't want to go into detail about my issue but I will say that it was something to do with obtaining information about one of my accounts that had been frozen, that was readily available, and that was ultimately resolved at the local branch level.  I wrote a letter to the CEO because the same local branch told me it could not help me and the 800 customer service manager also told me he could not help me.

The month-long delay in resolving this issue caused me great inconvenience and delayed me in being able to provide my CPA with my tax information.

There are many other banks out there.  Bank of the West, where I have another account and had a similar situation, solved it for me immediately and with great courtesy.  I am done with  Wells Fargo.

Altered Bank Deposit Slip

The teller accepted my deposit on an itemized Wachovia slip, agreed with my total, then rewrote it on a Wells Fargo slip. She destroyed my original slip, and rewrote it as only checks deposited; I had cash, but the DVD of the transaction does not show cash. Um. Since then Wells Fargo has altered my account to reflect $482.95 less than I deposited, claims I received my original deposit slip back, and closed the case. I have the Transaction Record from the teller stating the entire deposit.

The District Manager refused to meet with me. I've contacted the Better Business Bureau, a lawyer, and filed a federal complaint. How can this be justified by Wells Fargo? The teller rewrote the slip, never gave me back or made copies of my original, and claims the deposit is all checks. Wells Fargo has never questioned their methods, but certainly are ignoring my concerns. Wells Fargo can alter anyone's deposit slips and the customer, according to them, is at fault!

The Grants Pass, Oregon branch SUCKS BIG TIME! The managers apparently don't have any authority to make decisions in behalf of customers. I made a small deposit of an insurance check and they put a hold on it without notifying me. When I tried to use the money the same day, the transaction didn't go through. When I went back to the bank, they told me that their policy is posted in the drive through, lane 2 (where I made the deposit). When I went out and looked and pointed out to them that it wasn't posted there, they said the "policy" is posted on my receipt. I showed them the receipt and the policy was not posted their either. The "manager" said "well, I could change it but you don't have a big account here, so we don't have much of a relationship and I base my decisions on relationships!"  I told her that I've been banking there for over a year and she reiterated that my account isn't the "type" that they consider a relationship. Again, I said the policy wasn't told to me verbally, of in writing on the building or receipt and it was an insurance check that they could verify the authenticity of. She refused to be of service.  I'll be telling everyone I know how much Wells Fargo Bank SUCKS!

If it was easy to change banks, I would. If they were RIGHT next to my work I would never go there again. Ask for ID even though I have been in there for the past 5 years, really?

The tellers and supervisors are not on top of their policy changes. Waiting at this branch is long...people ask you why you are there waiting in line and try to convince you the atm would be faster. I had an account with WFB back in 1991...left BofA because of fees and fraud. WFB had too many fees then, but more even now. Several times in the last couple of months, I was charged overdraft fees because of their service fees...they charge you for their overdraft transfers from savings to checking even if you set up your accounts to be that way...with overdraft protection. They changed my free account to one that had to maintain $1500 without warning...then they changed it to an interest free checking account so it would be free to keep it open after I complained. I came back to WFB because I didn't want to wait 10 days for the checks to clear at the credit union I was at. Now I realize the wait is better than the fees...certainly less expensive. As soon as I can, I will be leaving WFB again.

Wells Fargo has very inefficient methods of processing accounts.  Just a dividing up a brokerage account between two people took 3 weeks after all the papers signed.  They had to send the papers out to Texas, then wait for them to return 3 weeks later.  On another occasion they had trouble distributing funds from a checking account.  It took them two weeks.  The worst part is they couldn't return phone calls to find out where the money went.
