If Hong Kong people or any of the rich Mainland peasants are involved in a banking the situation- I go elsewhere now. Why help those who play pathetic, then curse you when your not around. Was nothing learned by the Vietnam Error ? When I lived in the Kowloon district of Hong Kong, a crippled man in a wheelchair asked too many camera-related questions- so, the staff closed the "security" door and went to work on him ! I knew then, what the US govt. still does not know. All culture was destroyed by Mao. New Chinese have no reliable foundation or ethics. The semi-new guard is thus- not necessarily better than the staunch Maoists. Stupid nationalism is always dangerous regardless of the flag. Helping Chinese banks establish roots in the US ? What is wrong with everyone ? Do you not realize that Bush basically borrowed money from Communist China to finance his invasion of Iraq months after invading Afghanistan? ALL Apple products and many others are made in China; NOT the USA. Is this OK with you? Yes, lets just skip down to the local Hong Kong Shanghai Banking Corporation... la-dee-dah. The Fox News Club including Donald Trump (as Hootie the Owl) tink Obama is to blame for America's economic woes? Now, I've had a falling out with him- but for other reasons(Gitmo and now... he has screwed up investment prospects for American Expats. Sorry for the side-story! The moral of the story is: Do beware of the Middle Kingdom. It's time American started bringing jobs back to the US and stop thinking Americans are unaware of how other nationals seem to be a higher priority. My 2-cents worth on China is: They will take whatever we are stupid enough to give them, and with a smile. That which we do not give them- they will try to take through corporate and cyber theft. They are not your friends. Even though they may look cute when they're young... just like baby alligators.

This bank has no interest in servicing the customer. They do not know their own products or services. They do not follow up on what they say they will do and that goes from the branch VP to the teller. Do not waste your time or put your money at risk with this bank. Plus the do not tell the truth either.

Wow... I loved reading all of these reviews. Well heres a great HSBC experience. I recently received a bank wire transfer. Seeing that it was an internet sale of a car I was selling, after I received the money  I got nervous because the purchaser had all of my routing #'s and savings account # and names and addresses. So I decided to transfer these funds to my checking account. So I do my normal phone transfer and when I got my confirmation # I realized that it sounded different... so I check the balance in my checking account and it is not there. It is always there so I call the bank and they find out that I transferred the money to my HSBC platinum credit card. Ok so this is where the fun begins... Like all of you other past customers, I could only reach India and although the do speak great english...sort of like when you study for a part for a movie. I swear it is just A manequin with a computer generated response system.... like " MAY I PUT YOU ON A BRIEF HOLD? IT SHOULD ONLY BE A MINUTE OR 2"  THEY HAVE NO IDEA HOW TO ANSWER ANY PROBLEMS WHATSOEVER. So anyways... they figure out that I made a payment to my credit card that has a $0 balance. Unfortunately it takes 1-2 business days before it posts to your account. I beg them to cancel it because it was a $35,000.00 account transfer that went to the wrong account. So I wait the 2 days and it finally posts... now it hits the fraud department because of its size. Then I learn the real juicy stuff... Capital 1 bought HSBC's credit card division...so even though it says HSBC platinum credit card...it is actually serviced by Capital one...who has their own rules and regulations regarding overpayments. Between the 2 of them never being able to agree on anything discussed, it took 10 days for them to refund my money into the original savings account. They said the process if you request the overpayment to be returned is 1 -2 business days after it is confirmed in the fraud dept, then it takes 3-5 business days to actually receive it. It was like dealing with MARTIANS! Nobody ever saw such an overpayment so everybody went WHOOOOA...thats some overpayment. And laughed. They all say "I WOULD BE AS CONCERNED AS YOU! WELL IF YOUR THAT CONCERNED COULD YOU POSSIBLE IMPLEMENT A RULE IF THIS HAPPENS THE TRANSACTION COULD BE SIMPLY CANCELLED.  They just wanted to hold onto the $35K for a few days and grab that little bit of interest. I cant believe with all the stories this bank is in business. I find it hard with all banks...the people seem medicated....like preprogrammed robots. So its basically a mess...the entire banking system has become so impersonal. They never look up in fear of a person making eye contact and having to answer a question. Its a shame that an American institution has fallen to the point of making it hard to get what's yours...and what make this world go around. And the kicker to the story was I lost out on a business deal that required me to cancel and out of state business trip that could not be completed without those funds. I am also a Premier account holder and they made no exception for a 20+ year customer. And I have this credit card for over 15 years. What a shame.

I was at the branch on 48th Street and Madison Avenue, New York, NY to withdraw some cash for lucky money given to kids for Chinese New Year.  I was told they didn't have brand new bills there but I kindly asked the girl at the counter to at least find me bills that look new.  She ignored my request and counted the bills without checking the conditions of the bills.  When I got the money from her, the bills I got looked worse than the ones people withdrew from the ATM machines.  She even questioned my signature despite I gave her my government issued picture ID with my signature on it.  I ended up depositing back the money to my account at another branch because it just made me feel bad to give old bills to the kids for lucky money for Chinese New Year.

A mail-in deposit went missing in early October, 2012. I called the branch to investigate, and got no assistance from the branch whatsoever in tracking down the missing checks.  My "Premier" Relationship manager had left the branch six months earlier, but no one ever contacted me to tell me to stop sending checks to him. Was told by HSBC Premier customer service that "Priscilla, the branch manager, personally confirmed they did not receive the checks."  I managed to get one check reissued, but the other issuer refused to cut another check.  TWO MONTHS LATER, on 11/23/2012, both checks suddenly showed up in my account. I called right away and told customer service that I thought the checks would bounce, but she said they had already cleared. I pointed out that I had now been paid twice and was left having to sort that out, and she suggested that I write the payor a personal check!  Of course she was incorrect, and a few days later both checks bounced, and I was charged check return fees. The company that refused to reissue their check was having financial troubles and has since filed for Chapter 11; I believe that if HSBC hadn't held my check in their branch for TWO months, the check would have cleared and I would not be out $2k. On top of that, they are trying to charge me a check return fee that only occurred because my checks got lost in their branch for two months. No one has explained how or why my checks went missing for two months. Priscilla, the branch manager, refuses to speak with me. Really terrible customer service from the Premier team, and NO ONE has called or followed up.

I have not had a very good experience with this branch.

I asked the manager to stop a check made payable to AMEX because I had a dispute with the company over a charge I could not identify. He had me complete a form which he put through in such a way that HSBC refused to pay ALL the AMEX checks not just the one I questioned. As a result, AMEX cancelled my card because it was receiving a lot of returned items from HSBC. The manager took weeks to sort out this issue. As a result of this instance I still cannot reopen my account with AMEX and HSBC has hurt my credit score

The bank refused to allow me to maintain a company account with it because it considered my business to be "inappropriate". Mind you this is the same bank that has accounts of international terrorists, drug dealers, money launderers and dictators, and it is telling me that my account is inappropriate!

I was a customer for a number of years. The reason I took my business elsewhere was first they took 3 days to clear a check that was under $2,000 and could not explain why I would get $400, then $600 and then the rest.

But more importantly, when I was younger and opened my account, I signed my signature card in front of a woman who I believe still works there. It was my first account, I was nervous signing in front of someone... don't you know she looks at the card and says to me "you can really tell the difference between public and private school"... What a disgusting human being. Needless to say when I noticed she still worked there, I could not stomach keeping my money there.

I went on to work at a bank myself. On Wall Street. Your loss.

This bank cashed a postdated check for over $10,000 and then charged me a sequence of fees for insufficient funds because I hadn't yet put the money in the checking account for that check.  When I went in to rectify this, they refused to refund me the fees and said that it is the fault of the bank which accepted the check. They obviously don't care about their clients. I plan to switch my bank and never use HSBC again.

The staff here is exceptional and should be praised!
I had a problem with my mortgage and another with an incorrect credit rating.  Both issues were from the corporate office.  The staff at this bank helped me with both, quickly, in a caring fashion and correctly.  They went out of their way to rectify a situation which was no fault of their own .
I highly recommend them and I thank them!

Wow. I've been to some bad banks, but this is certainly the worst. Seems like the NEVER have more than one line open no matter how busy there are... and it's always the 'business' lane so you have to wait while someone counts out 80 rolls of quarters for some pizza shop owner. All the while they make you stand there like a moron; no one will make eye contact or give you a cursory "We'll be right with you." And their ATMs seems to be down a lot FORCING you to use a teller.

i opened an account with HSBC at the lynbrook,ny branch, the banker spelled my name wrong on all the papers while he had my drivers license in his hand, he ripped up those papers when i pointed it out to him and proceeded to rewrite it spelling my name wrong again in a different way, still holding on to my license. after 20 mins of finally correcting it, my debit card came with a completely wrong spelling again.. i am dealing with imbeciles . tried after several calls to get a new card finally did get through and received the new card with a misspelled name again. IT IS UNBELIEVABLE THAT WE WOULD INTRUST OUR MONEY TO THESE MORONS!!!

I am writing regarding one of the personal bankers at the Georgetown branch. Anthony Nicolella recently became our personal banker. I asked him if it was possible to combine my commercial and personal accounts on to one screen so I would not have to bounce back and forth and be able to maneuver between them easily without cost. Anthony (Tony) welcomed this unsual challenge and worked with both the commercial and personal sides and made it all happen in a matter of a few days. Anthony is the kind of personal banker who truly believes in making sure his clients are totally satisfied. If you are looking for a personal manager who truly cares about his clients needs. I highly recommend him.

I am a Brit.  I have banked in the UK for 35+ years with a number of banks, including FirstDirect, HSBC's excellent on-line service.

I was relocated to California (it could be worse !) by my employer, and as part of my package, I was given access to HSBC Premier in the UK and US.  Essentially, given the nature of retail banking, this is the ONLY bank able to offer a presence in two locations without the high "wire" charges that normal US banks seem to impose.

So, I moved the HSBC UK, and all seemed fine.  Same features as my existing bank except being that it used to be Midland bank, it is weighed down with a massive and mostly redundant branch network in the UK so their current (checking) account interest rates are not the best (I was getting about 2.3% with Smile, and less than 1% with HSBC UK).

Moving my bank to the US was like going back 25 years in retail banking.  Now, I don't have a choice - I have to stay with HSBC US, as no other banks offer the transfers and multiple currencies that I need, but I sure wish that I could.

WHAT an experience.  First, people in the US are still using CHEQUES !  Yet, trying to pay those in is a nightmare - ATM networks CHARGE to take money out if it's not the home bank; there are few or no HSBC ATMs in useful places; the on-line service (even Premier) can only do a very limited number of things and EVERYTHING else has to be done IN A BRANCH !!!!!!   Oh My G**   What year are we in ????

So, I tried to set up a very common transaction - an electronic transfer to my landlord.  Initially I was told that this wasn't possible in the US, and I should use a 19th Century mechanism that uses vast amounts of petroleum and wood - a cheque in the post....   No thanks, I said; I want an electronic system like every other country has.   Oh yes, say HSBC, there is one called ACH, but due to FBI requirements (YES !!!) we don't tell everyone about it.  More like because they can't be bothered to set it up.

Now, I searched and searched on-line to set up an ACH and eventually I find that you can ONLY do this IN THE BRANCH with witnesses.  So, off I go to set this up.

The Branch did not have a clue.  They got it all wrong and ended up taking my account overdrawn as they debited the amount twice.

On my account on-line, I don't see ANY details of the ACH - the only way to find out simple things like which bank it is going to is to go into the branch and have them phone the ACH department who only seem to work between coffee breaks, Eastern time, every third Thursday if it's not raining.  THIS IS A 24 HOUR BANK !!!!

But, eventually, they got it right, and for 10 months all was good.  Until my landlord changed his account details....

So, I went in to cancel the ACH (I hate wasting petrol to drive 5 miles each way to a bank branch to do something that could be done on-line).  They messed this up big time.

The result - 3 days after Christmas, with me in the UK, I get a phone call - you are seriously overdrawn.  They had debited the amount on the wrong date FOUR TIMES and couldn't work out what had gone wrong.

You'll have to come into the branch - I CAN'T - I'M IN ENGLAND !!!!  The day I got back, I went in to an empty branch (at least, of customers - plenty of staff earning vast banking salaries...) and saw the manager who made many, many phone calls.  Sir, it's sorted.

So, imagine my surprise when the amount goes out the next month on the wrong date and again takes my account overdrawn.  Again, Premier phone service is useless, and yet more of my time and petrol is wasted sitting in a bricks-and-mortar office, whilst they phone their contacts in NJ to sort it out.  Even the branch has no access to half of the systems.

Remember - I don't have a choice of banks.

So, what are the issues ?

1) The online service is hopeless.  Half the information is missing, half the data out-of-date.  Nothing updates in real-time.
2) The phone service is no better - it just relies on the on-line service.
3) The bank branches need to be closed, and the vast amount of money wasted on bank staff and buildings used to build a decent on-line, 24/7 service.
4) There needs to be a nationwide ATM network of all banks for deposits and withdrawals.
5) Customers should be encouraged to go-green and use electronic payment methods, not cheques by making electronic transfers FREE and cheques EXPENSIVE.  This is the norm in most other Western 1st world countries (UK, France, Germany) - surely the US could do a little better ?

HSBC Retail banking is stuck in about 1940 and frankly, it's been a big shock.  I had telephone banking in 1985, on-line with free dial-up very soon after, and I cannot remember the last time in the UK I went into a bank branch (our home branch on our joint account is in a town we last visited in 1992 !).   I have a cheque book I last used 10 years ago.   If someone does give me a cheque, I can take it to the local post-office branch to pay it in, ans the Post Office in the UK offers deposits for all UK banks (for free) and withdrawals by Debit card for about 50% (again, for free). And I get paid for keeping my account in credit.

(And I would rate UK retail banking about 10 years behind Germany.)

HSBC are the very model of all that is wrong in retail banking.
